The University Wits were a group of writers who graduated from either Oxford or Cambridge University. It includes Christopher Marlowe , Thomas Kyd , John Lyly , Thomas Lodge , Thomas Nash , Grorge Peele and Robert Greene. They are passionate about dramas and are arrogant about their position and the education they received from their University. They paved a way for William Shakespeare to develop in the field of drama and hence they are also known as Pre- Shakespearean dramatists. Christopher Marlowe is considered to be the father of Modern English Drama. William Shakespeare was heavily influenced by three University Wits which includes Christopher Marlowe , Thomas Kyd and John Lyly. Christopher Marlowe influenced Shakespeare more in the literary drama especially with the choosing of diction in tragedy. Marlowe chose blank verse as a medium for diction in his plays. The blank verse are written in iambic pentameter and are usually unrhyme. The reason for choosing the blank verse was the ability to memorize the dialogues and lines by the actors. It also fits the sound and pitch perfectly to enable the audience to hear the enunciation properly. Shakespeare also chose the use of blank verse in his plays and the major difference in Shakespeare is that his blank verse were more poetic and not neccessarily etched. He perfected the blank verse with the iambic pentameter for his plays and the only play “Richard II” was written in verse form rather than blank verse. The University Wits were heavily influenced by Seneca. The works of Seneca were translated during their studies in the University and hence it greatly influenced them. The elements found in Marlowe’s and especially Kyd’s were blood, murder , death , revenge and assassination filled with horror. University Wits used these elements in their writings to evoke the feelings of “pity and fear” on the audience. Shakespeare on the other hand imitate the elements to intensify the plot and the entire story as well. For instance, “Hamlet” shows the elements of death , murder and revenge yet it not only aroused “pity and fear” to the audience but also affected the plot which eventually made it more effective as it mainly affects the protagonist and his position. Thomas Kyd also influenced William Shakespeare with his play “The Spanish Tragedy”. Based on the Senecan Model , it gave an enthralling element of play within a play. The play within a play is the use of another play which is fit inside the play itself. The ghost of Don Andrea watches the entire play as the ghost was dead previously on the battle killed by Balthazar and was about to find out whether his revenge is fulfilled or not. “Hamlet” is the play which seems to have shown influences as suggested by the critics and scholars as the ghost of Hamlet’s father appeared to Hamlet to take revenge on Claudius as he was murdered. Hamlet enacted a play and called the group of actors to act the same scene where Claudius killed Hamlet’s father which is the element of play within a play. Lastly , John Lyly is another important University Wits which influenced Shakespeare. His famous play “Endymion” is mostly appreciated by the Elizabethans. He is mistaken by most of the Elizabethans as he wrote comedies mostly. His comedies influenced Shakespeare and the important element was the use of comical subplots in the plays. Shakespeare also uses comical subplots in his plays which includes “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream” and “Love’s Labour Lost”. He uses comical elements as a subplot to evoke humor to the audience.
