Their colour arises from electronic transitions between orbitals that are largely localized on: (1) the ligands viz. CO (2) metal framework (3) oxygen atoms of CO graup not involved in bonding (4) carbon atoms of CO, which are not involved in bonding

    option 2 here MLCT takes place in case of polynuclear metal carbonyla. here CO is pi acid ligand which have vacant pi* molecule orbitals. MLCT is given by metal based orbitals. for details check the diagram
