Time management is very much important in IIT JAM. The eduncle test series for IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics helped me a lot in this portion. I am very thankful to the test series I bought from eduncle.

Aluminium having 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p1 electronic configuration has free d orbitals in the form of 3d orbitals. Now there are 1 electron in 3p orbital and rest two orbitals of p orbital and five orbitals of d orbital is free for accommodating electrons. Hence maximum covalency must be equal to 1 ( pairing of already present electron in p orbital ) + 2 + 5 = 8. But small ion like aluminium can not accommodate 8 atoms around it as it cause steric hindrance and makes the compound unstable. Hence maximum covalency shown by aluminium is 6.
