The Birch reduction of anisole is thought to proceed by the formation of the radical anion which is protonated to give a cyclohexadienyl radical. The observed product, 2,5 dihydroanisole, can be formed from two possible cyclohexadienyls, one arising by ortho protonation of the anisole anion and the other by meta attack.
