Very small sized Be2+ cation has high hydration energy which is much higher than lattice energy. Hence, BeF2 is highly soluble in water. The fluorides of other alkaline earth metals are insoluble in water as they have high lattice energies. The decreasing order of solubility of alkaline earth metal fluorides is Be2+>Mg2+>Ca2+>Sr2+>Ba2+.
