Can you explain this with examples

Every closed interval [a, b] is a closed set, R [a, b] = (-o, a) (b, + o) and R.H.S. being the union of twO open sets is an open set. [a, b) is not a closed set, R la, b) = (- co, a)u [b, + o) is not an open set as the R.H.S. is a nbd. of each of its points except b. Similarly, (a, b]. (a, b) are not closed sets.

    Can you tell how did they split [a,b]=(plus infinity,a) union (b,minus infinity)

    No, they split the complement of [a,b] ...i.e , they split R-[a,b] or u can also write it as R\[a,b]
