Change in entropy when 1 gm of ice at -10°c convert to water at 10°c in cal/k is cal/k. latent heat of fusion of ice is 80 caligm. 11. c, (water) = 1 cal gr' c,

Change in entropy when 1 gm of ice at -10°C convert to water at 10°C in cal/k is cal/k. Latent heat of fusion of ice is 80 caligm. 11. C, (water) = 1 cal gr' C, (ice) = 0.5 cal g .....here in solution intial temp for ice is taken as 263 but ice is converting into water so intial temp should be 273 why it is so ???

Here ice(-10 degree Celsius) is converting to water(+10 degree Celsius). There are three steps involved in this process- 1. ice at -10 degree Celsius(263K) to ice at 0 degree Celsius(273K). 2.ice at 0 degree Celsius(273K) to water at 0 degree Celsius(273K) (required latettent heat).3.water at 0 degree Celsius(273K) to water at +10 degree Celsius(283K). And you have to calculate entropy for these three process separately as given in the solution. You have asked that how initial temperature is 263K?You are thinking that it should be 273K. But the initial temperature of ice is -10 degree Celsius which is 263K. If you still have problem mention it in comment.
