CSIR Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Fellowship (SPMF) is named after Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who was the first Vice-President of CSIR in Independent India.
To commemorate the birth centenary year (2000) of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, CSIR has instituted this special fellowship.
The Fellowship is open to all the JRF toppers of CSIR NET Exam.
The main objective of the fellowship is to nurture the budding scientific talent and to nourish the objective of the pursuit of scientific research.

How many SPM Scholarships are offered to the CSIR NET Exam Toppers?
In accordance with the Official Statements – “A maximum of 10 SPM Fellowships each in Chemical Sciences and Life Sciences, and 5 each in Earth, Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences will be awarded through interview mode.”
Candidates in the ratio of 1:3 will be called for an interview in each subject.

What is the Minimum Eligibility Criteria, to enroll for SPMF?
Well, the basic eligibility criteria to avail the CSIR Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Scholarship is that the Candidate should be amongst top merit rankers.

To make the selection process easier, CSIR has defined the eligibility criteria based on the Reservation Categories.
As mentioned above, the candidates will be called for an interview in the ratio of 1:3 (Candidates to be selected for the Fellowship: Candidates to be selected for the Interview).

SPMF Category Wise Selection Procedure for Toppers
The category-wise number of candidates to be called for the interview is based on the reservation policy, i.e. 27% for OBC, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST and 3% for PWD.
1. For General Candidates
The top rankers in each subject from the combined merit list of General/OBC/SC/ST/PWD will be called for the interview.

Life Sciences – Top 14 Candidates
Chemical Science – Top 14 Candidates
Earth Sciences - Top 7 Candidates
Mathematical Sciences - Top 7 Candidates
Physical Sciences - Top 7 Candidates
2. For OBC Candidates
The subject wise merit criteria is as follows –
Life Sciences – Top 8 Candidates
Chemical Sciences – Top 8 Candidates
Earth Sciences - Top 4 Candidates
Mathematical Sciences - Top 4 Candidates
Physical Sciences - Top 4 Candidates
A maximum relaxation of 5% of the cutoff of the 14th/7th candidates of the unreserved category will be given to OBC candidates subject to shortlisting of a maximum of 8/4 candidates for interview in the respective subject.
3. For SC Candidates
The subject wise merit criteria is as follows –
Life Sciences – Top 5 Candidates
Chemical Sciences – Top 5 Candidates
Earth Sciences - Top 2 Candidates
Mathematical Sciences - Top 2 Candidates
Physical Sciences - Top 2 Candidates
Maximum relaxation of 10% of the cutoff of the 14th/7th candidates of the unreserved category will be given to SC candidates subject to shortlisting of a maximum of 5/2 candidates for interview in the respective subject.
4. For ST Candidates
The subject wise merit criteria is as follows –
Life Sciences – Top 2 Candidates
Chemical Sciences – Top 2 Candidates
Earth Sciences - Top 1 Candidate
Mathematical Sciences - Top 1 Candidate
Physical Sciences - Top 1 Candidate
Maximum relaxation of 10% of the cutoff of the 14th/7th candidates of the unreserved category will be given to ST candidates subject to shortlisting of a maximum of 2/1 candidates for interview in the respective subject.
5. For PWD Candidates
The subject wise merit criteria is as follows –
Life Sciences – Top 1 Candidate
Chemical Sciences – Top 1 Candidate
Earth Sciences - Top 1 Candidate
Mathematical Sciences - Top 1 Candidate
Physical Sciences - Top 1 Candidate
Maximum relaxation of 10% of the cutoff of the 14th/7th candidates of the unreserved category will be given to PWD candidates.
What is the amount and duration of CSIR Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Fellowship?
The candidates who are selected after the Interview stage will get a stipend of INR 36000 per month during the first two years of the fellowship.
After completion of two years of fellowship, the candidates’ stipend amount will increase to INR 42000 per month based on his/her performance. If he/she doesn’t found satisfactory for this increment, then he/she will be reverted to JRF.
The maximum tenure of SPM Fellowship will be up to 5 years.
Contingent Grant:
The candidates after completing their two years of fellowship will be eligible for annual contingent grant of INR 70,000.
For less than one year, the contingent grant will be admissible on the pro-rata basis.
The candidates can utilize this grant for the following purposes –
Purchasing books, etc. relevant to the research topic.
Meeting train fare (AC III tier) and DA in case the fellow needs to travel in pursuit of research of presenting the paper in the conference.
Registration of PhD & submission of the thesis.
The Registration fee for attending the conference in India & abroad.
Buying chemicals/ consumable items/ minor equipment.
Reprints of research papers.
Contingency grant may be utilized for specific items such as purchasing laptop/desktop computer once in the whole tenure, on the recommendation of the supervisor however the prior approval of CSIR is mandatory.
The purchased items will be the property of the host institute and fellow must surrender it on completion of his/her tenure or resignation from his/her fellowship.
For attending conferences abroad, SPM Fellows should apply in the travel grant scheme of HRDG where partial/ full air fare is given to research scholars for presenting their research papers. However, once in the entire tenure, per diem expenditure for the conference period can be claimed from contingency grant as per host institute’s rule.
