Trails are fossilized structures created by ancient animals moving around on soft material.  Worms and worm-like animals left trails in ancient deposits. The fossil trails on this rock in the photo below were made by a crawling animal. Trace is a fossil record of biological activity but not the preserved remains of the plant or animal itself. Trace fossils contrast with body fossils, which are the fossilized remains of parts of organisms' bodies, usually altered by later chemical activity or mineralization. petrification is the process by which organic material becomes a fossil through the replacement of the original material and the filling of the original pore spaces with minerals. Petrified wood typifies this process

Trace fossils also known as ichnofossils are geological records of biological activity. They are fossils, but not of the living things themselves. Different types of trace fossils include track, burrow, boring, trails etc. Trail is a type of trace fossils in which continuous impression of animal movement is preserved in cohesive sediments like mud. These continuous impressions are preserved in geological record and are known as trail ichnofossil. The figure attached below is a trail ichnofossil formed by movement of trilobites on sea floor.
