    Quarter wave plate does not change the intensity passing through its optical axis. If I_o =E^2 be the intensity then component along the optical axis of quarter wave plate is Ecos45 therefore intensity after passing through the quarter wave plate is (Ecos45)^2=E^(cos45)^2=I_o/2. So intensity will be half of the incident wave. therefore option b is correct
