The effective nuclear charge (often symbolized as {\displaystyle Z_{\mathrm {eff} }} or {\displaystyle Z^{\ast }}) is the net positive charge experienced by an electron in a polyelectronic atom. The term "effective" is used because the shielding effect of negatively charged electrons prevents higher orbital electrons from experiencing the full nuclear charge of the nucleus due to the repelling effect of inner-layer electrons.

The acidic nature of halogen acids in methanoic acid is HF>HCl>HBr>HI It is based on the electronegativity difference between H and haloge. F2 is most electronegative and I2 is the least electronegative. Thus, the electronegativity difference is maximum in HF and minimum in HI. HF is the most ionic and strongest acid in methanoic acid whereas HI is least ionic and weakest acid in methanoic acid.
