Strata dipping upstream and wide valley region because:-- A gravity dam is a structure designed to withstand loads by its own weight and by its resistance to sliding and overturning on its foundation so a bigger structure means more weight so a wide valley is good one

Answer: (b) Strata dipping upstream in a wide valley Gravity dams are best suited for wide/broad river valley (However it can also be built on narrow river valley with sound foundation rocks). The upstream dipping rocks will minimise the pore fluid pressure and hence will provide stability of the dam.
