    A half wave plate tends to shift the polarization direction of linearly polarized light. When considering a linearly polarized light, a half wave plate refers to the effect of the half wave plate that rotates the polarization vector at an angle of 2θ. However, if we consider an elliptically polarized light, the half wave plate shows the effect of inverting the handedness of the light. To check the rotation we use an instrument Polarimeter. Using such other instruments we can measure the amount of rotation of light.

    I mean suppose I have two electric fields equations given as E1=E0(x+y)Cos(wt+kz) and final field Expression as E2=E0(x-y)Cos(wt+ kz) and we need to identify what is the phenomenon taking place, the answer was that the field was subjected half wave plate,now I want to know how can one conclude whether there is a change in handedness of polarized light just by looking at these equations

    you see here only y component has reversed its direction rest all is same. As i have mentioned that for linear polarised, wave rotates by 2 theta. Incoming wave has amplitude Eo(x cap + y cap) it means it enters with theta = 45. so it rotates by 90 degree. see in diagram.
