The symmetric group S_3 is the following group: Consider the set M={1,2,3} with three elements. A permutation of M is a function from M to itself that is both 1–1 and onto. I.e., a function that has an inverse function from M to itself. Now the permutations of M with the composition of functions as a binary operation is a group, the group S_3.
