HEAT CAN BE LOST FROM A SYSTEM BY MEANS OF RADIATION , CONDUCTION AND CONVECTION. LITHOSPHERE IS A SOLID PART CONSIST OF CRUST AND UPPER MANTLE AND IT'S THE PLATE WE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT. AS IT'S IN A SOLID FORM HEAT MUST BE LOST BY MEANS OF CONDUCTION ONLY.. BUT IN ASTHENOSPHERE IT'S DUE TO CONVECTION. NOTE::- RADIATION IS A METHOD OF HEAT TRANSFER REQUIRES NO MEDIUM.,WHERE AS A PARTICLE MEDIUM IS REQUIRED FOR BOTH CONDUCTION AND CONVECTION.

Conduction is the dominant process responsible for heat loss in lithosphere. Conduction can happen in solid substance whereas convection dominantly occurs in fluids (liquids and gases). Lithosphere is rigid solid part of Earth that's why conduction happens in Lithosphere and is responsible for heat loss.
