A fault is formed in the Earth's crust as a brittle response to stress. Generally, the movement of the tectonic plates provides the stress, and rocks at the surface break in response to this. It's already marked my dear ... Sigma 1 is the vertical one and sigma 3 is the horizontal one. and the inclined one is the fracture plane. Sigma 1 is the maximum pricipal stress and sigma 3 is the minimum principal stress .

Sir,I'm having problem in resolving the stress component direction at sigma 1 and sigma 2 intercept by the plane .

Dear Dev any strees upon a plane is resolved by means of stress component.

    what happened dev

stress is not a vector it's a tensor so it can be resolved taking force as well as area vector components along them
