    Molecular orbital diagram helps in determining the bond order

    Sir, i have read the process of finding B O of diatomic molecules but for molecules like CN- is not given in the study material...so... is the process same for CN-?...can you please show me bo of CN- ?

    In a similar way you can draw all MO diagram and find the bond order just keep in mind some instructions that first count electrons if it is 14 or less than 14 then relative energy is similar if it more than 14 then change...same as you read in case of N2 and O2... and second thing for the heteroatomic molecule like CO,CN the MO diagram changes little bit that the atomic orbital of more electronegative atom lies below

    But in exam no need to draw the MO diagram and then calculate bond order just by trick you can calculate bond order
