In this diagram path of the projctile is shown.A partilce is thrown with a velocity Vi making a cenrtain angle with the horizontal. At different position of the particle you can resolve the velocity of that particle at yhat moment into two components. one along horizontal(x-axis) and another along vertical direction. The diagram shows the velocity component at different position. Notice that, below the maximum height velocity componennts are along horizontal and vertically upward direction.Horizontal component helps the particle to move forward and the upward component helps to achieve the height. At maximum height only horizontal component is present. After the maximum height components are along horizontal and vertically downward direction.Horizontal component helps to move in forward direction and the vertically downward component tries to down the particle.
