    Here is the solution - 

    By using Chinese remainder theorem, 172 when divided by 79, we get remainder 14.

    Since 14 = 172 mod x, so 0 = (172-14) = 158 mod x. So x is a factor of 158 and among the options only 79 is the factor of 158.
