In early Buddhism, Nirvana is used as a synonym for vimutti, release from samsara, as the ultimate goal of the Buddhist path. It remains the highest goal in contemporary Theravada tradition. According to the Lotus Sutra of the Mahayana tradition, the attainment of nirvana is a lesser goal; the highest goal is the attainment of Buddhahood. A being who has attained the Buddhahood does not abide in an isolated nirvana, but out of compassion seeks to liberate all sentient beings by teaching the Buddhist path.
