R K Narayan’s novel Swami and Friends has a special mention of cricket in many chapters (16-19). The novel was published in 1935 mirroring a story set in colonial India. The story starts with the introduction of Swaminathan and his four best friends Somu, Sankar, Mani, and Pea. Swami adores his friends for their different personality and how their group is entirely different because of them.  Swami’s life changes when Malgudi’s new police superintendent’s son Rajam enters in his life.  They confound a cricket team together naming it M.C.C. (Malgudi Cricket Club). Swami misses several practices due to heavy homework load and Rajam threatens him to never speak to him again if he missed their match with the other team. When Swami leaves home due to the overload of homework and drill practice that always caused him no time or delay in cricket practice with Rajam, he even saw a dream on the way (when he was lost) bowling in the maidan and hitting the ball straight to the cruel Headmaster who never understood his passion for cricket. The game is though a citation from the colonial India but supports the way in which development in friendship is found. The novel also tells about the burden of homework and the repercussion on students.
