Wimsatt and Monroe Beardsley introduced the essay “The Intentional Fallacy” in their book the Verbal Icon (1954) which proved a landmark in the school of literature known as New Criticism. It relates that “the design or intention of the author is neither available nor desirable as a standard for judging the success of a work of literary art”. In the essay they argue that the text is the primary source of meaning, and any details of the author’s desires or life are secondary. They convey that even details about the work’s composition or the author’s intended meaning and purpose that might be found in other documents such as journals or letters are “private or idiosyncratic; not a part of the work as a linguistic fact” and are thus secondary to the trained reader’s rigorous engagement with the text itself
The proponents of New Criticism says that the affective fallacy is the misconception that arises from judging a poem by the emotional effect that it produces in the reader. The concept of affective fallacy is a direct attack on impressionistic criticism, which argues that the reader’s response to a poem is the ultimate indication of its value. The term was coined by W.K. Wimsatt and Monroe Beardsley in 1949 as a principle of New Criticism which is often paired with their study of The Intentional Fallacy.
