Because all the chromosomes are arranged at middle of cell. we can count number as well as length of p and q arm of chromosome.

no they are asking for how to count and measure chromosomes.

yes, but prophase is again divided in to early, mid and late. condensation of chromatin starts at early prophase. at mid or end the chromosomes are visible but distributed throughout the cytoplasm. some of them should be seen overlaped and we view them in 2d light microscope. so at early, mid and late metaphse shows exact chromosome which can clearly visible.
