Well i don't think that there exist any specific study related to the formations and the environment related. You have to cram alot, as stratigraphy in rare cases involves concepts. But various studies like sequential stratigraphy is used prominently in case of accumulation , Progradation and Retrogradation. Also various minerals are found to be the characteristics of specific environment like fe oxides shows the Reducing or oxidising prevailed environment, glauconite shows humid conditions, calcite or the limestone shows warmer conditions in marine realms. Also some marine environment like shelf or shoreface facies involves some regressive formations(like coarsening upward sequence while fining upward in case of transgressions) . Also some paleontological traces or biomarkers can give idea about the formation and the environment related to the respective formation(as some phylum thrives in marine conditions while some of them thrives in freshwater conditions and some of them compatible with the both norms).
