    Joints perpendicular to the fold axes are called as extension joints and are very common in orogenic belts. Such joints form as a result of slight elongation parallel to the axis of the fold. Joints parallel to the axial plane (or fold axis) of the fold are known as release joints. In the figure shown below, plane ABCD is indicating extension joint (perpendicular to the fold axis) and plane EFGH is indicating release joints (parallel to the fold axis).

    Extension joints perpendicular to fold axis. Release parallel to axial plane of fold axis. Shear joints results in shearing of twoblocks tension joint in rising granite block when cooled or the upper overburden is weatherd.
