    Island arc forms as a volcanic island in the sea as a result of ocean-ocean plate collision whereas continental arc (also known as continental volcanic arc) forms on continental region as a result of ocean-continental plate collision. Refer to the attached figure for detailed diagram.

    1.When an oceanic and a continental plate collide, eventually the oceanic plate is subducted under the continental plate due to the high density of the oceanic plate. 2.then the ocenic plate gets melted and come to the top of continent as volcanic arc. these are of adesitic magma in composition. the arc name suggesting the arcute shape of volacnic chain if the arc is formed inside ocean known as island arc.
