    IISc always ask excellent questions. some facts you must know beefore solving the question are, at extream position, Kinetic energy is zero. I have assumed mean position as reference level for gravitational potential energy, that's why potential energy is zero at mean position. and Potential energy at extream position is mg times the height from mean Position. solution attached.

    at mean position, the net radial force (force along the length of string at mean position) will provide necessary centripetal force. that's why I have equated net force with (mv^2)/L
