Monotonically decreasing!

please explain to me the statement given in the attachment and give an example to make it more understandable.

    word monotonic means it doesn't change direction , so monotonically decreasing means function with decreasing graph. Monotonic functions are either decreasing or increasing. for example y =-x is monotonically decreasing function. In short if you increase the value of x then value of f(x) is going to decrease. similar argument hold for monotonically increasing.
