During flood stages, the overflow water carries sediment onto the floodplain. A greater portion of the sediment is deposited near the channel thus forming an elevated aggradational deposit called a natural levee. This feature may become a major topographic feature in the floodplain, and can even cause the river to flow at a higher elevation than the floodplain. The material in a natural levee exhibits evidence of rapid deposition, shallow flow depths, multiple flow cycles, and sub-aerial exposure. The continual wetting and drying causes the sediment to be compacted, oxidised, and highly leached. The grain size includes sand and coarser silt near the stream and finer silt and clay toward the floodplain. Raised mounds are formed near the riverbank where the larger material is deposited, and the gently sloping sides are a result of the smaller particles deposited away from the riverbank. The water’s natural movement creates a levee by pushing the sediments aside as is seen in the banks of a river which are higher than the riverbed. Since levees form naturally parallel to the flow of the river, they also help direct the flow. Thus, natural levee is an example of b) flood plain deposit.
