Opacity depends on thickness of specimen analysed.

Opacity depends on thickness of specimen analysed.Example. Silicates are generally opaque in hand specimen,may become translucent in thin sections and even Transperent in Exceptionally thin microscopic sections. Then What are these kind of minerlas are called ?? Either Opaque, Transparent or Translucent???.

    Dear Vaibhav, here is the answer for your query.

     

    Opaticity of silicate minerals depends on their crystal structures as well as Thin section, As exceptionally thin minerals show translucent to transparent behaviour because light passes easily through it and reflect to back to your eyes easily.


    And Yes The GEMSTONES which are variable in opaticity along there different surfaces, shows translucent behaviour along with transparent behaviour as well as Opaque.

    So these kind of Minerals are called as GEMSTONES.

    Example- Agate a microcrystalline variety of quartz which show alternating bands and variable opaticity.
