The basic principle behind this is the anisotropic nature of some crystals. I will explain each term. we know different crystals have different refractive indices. if the refractive indiex is same in all directions of a crystal (direction independent), this type of crystal is known as isotropic crystal. But if we have different refractive index in orthogonal directions of the same crystal (i.e. the crystal has two different refractive index in two orthogonal directions) this is called anisotropic crystal. (if two types of refractive indices are there, this is call doubly refracting surface.) and speed or em waves(light) depends on refractive index. hence in the two orthogonal directions, light will travel with different speeds(as refractive index is different) it means, the crystal retards the light more in a particular direction. this if called retardation in crystals. this leads to a phase leg between the two components of light. for more details, do visit this site. I found this helpful. https://www.edmundoptics.eu/knowledge-center/application-notes/optics/understanding-waveplates/

retardation. In crystal optics, the amount by which the slow wave falls behind the fast wave during passage through an anisotropic crystal plate. Retardation depends on plate thickness and the difference in refractive indices of its two principal directions. ......see attached file
