in a complex compound, ligand acts as the molecule which can donate electrons to the central metal ion ehi acts as Lewis acid...as NH3 has a lone pair or electrons which are not used in bond formation, donates the lone pair to metal ion.. forming coordinate covalent bond..... Molecule having lone pair electrons Will act as ligand for example,NH3 is ligand as it has a lone pair of electron...whereas NH4+ ion doesn't' act as ligand as it have no lone pair....

basically im weak in this section, can you tell me how nitrogen have a loan pair in case of NH3, Nitrogen have 7 electron & H have 3 & hence their octate gets completed, then how do loan pair comes , ?

its configuration become like neon, so why any molecule like to loose inert gas like conditions by loosing electron

    eduncle-logo-app

Valency=no. of bonds to be formed to complete it's octet. And lone pair are those electrons which don't participate in bond formation but these lone pair are responsible for their basic nature.

Anand in coordination complex metal ion acts as lewis acid whict accept electron pair and ligands acts as a lewis base which donates electron pair

    eduncle-logo-app

Nh3 donates its lone pair of electrons to metal ion

    eduncle-logo-app

And form coordination bond..as you know in coordination bond the required 2 electrons for bonding comes from only one atom

    Like this

    eduncle-logo-app

    Got it anand??

    eduncle-logo-app

in case of F- i can say that its octate is complete and it is stable so it can donate loan pair but in case of NH3 it will lose its stability na

    eduncle-logo-app

Here we consider NH3 as a molecule na...It has one lone pair of electrons after coordination bonding also...it completes its octet

    eduncle-logo-app

you tell anand in coordination bond octet is conpleted or not??

    eduncle-logo-app

can you explain me in case of CN-

    eduncle-logo-app

    or CO

    eduncle-logo-app

Here different cases arises as these all are Pi acid ligands backbonding case

    eduncle-logo-app

Simply you considered na ligand acts as a lewis base and donates its electrons pair

  • Suman Kumar best-answer

    It donates it's lone pair

    eduncle-logo-app

    Through co-ordinate covalent bond

    eduncle-logo-app

    See this

    eduncle-logo-app

Nh3 completes octate by 2p6 and if it donate electeron it will become instable na

    eduncle-logo-app

in case of F- it is stable and can donate pair but how it is in case of nh3
