Please explain me with its answer. a260/a280 ratio--what does it mean?

IIT JAM-2006| 8. The A260/A280 ratio of a DNA sample was 8. observed to be 1.2. An increase in this ratio can be obtained by subjecting the DNA sample to (a) phenol extraction (b) trichloroacetic acid treatment (c) butanol extraction (d) all of the above can be used

    Answer is (D). All the techniques is for nucleic acid purification and decrease the amount of contaminants. So the ratio will be increased in all of the methods.
