Plz explain this.... mpounds. 1he alkys ui complexation

compounds. 1he alkyS UI Complexation Behaviour of Alkali Metals netaliIC and and organic The alkali metals generally have weak complexing ability. This is he alayafion viz, small size, hign nucear charge and availability of empty orhit se the factor that iavour lacking in alkali metals. nergy are oves like [Li(H,O) Cs{H,0) are known. A number of chelates are knouirn those with salicylaldehyde and acetyl acetone. innortant development in the field of alkali metal chemistry is the discovery of complexes with cyclic ethers and cryptands (cryptates) 1.e. With macro cyclic molecules containina nit The cyclic ethers are called crown ethers; they have varying sizes of rings and form complexes with alkali metal ions by donating electron deng agents than the crown ethers, with eight donor atoms (nitrogen and oxygen) surrounding the metal ion completely. The ability of crown ether r a cryptands to trap a metal ion depends on the size of both the cavity and the metal ion.

See alkali metal are known for their eletropositivity. They don't form complexes as they have low charge density , can't form covalent bond except lithium. But Cryptand & crown ether can do complexation with them. It's same like forcing someone to stay in locked room ..... analogy for complexation

Due to the chelate effect, crown ethers and cryptands have greater affinity for alkali metal ions.. The cation selectivity for alkali metal ions is mainly dependent on the size and charge density of the ion and the cavity size of the crown ether.

crown ethers are generally polyethers separated by two methylene group...here cental metal generally is alkali metal and alkaline earth metal to which ethereal oxygen is coordinated......Here arrangement is like crown so it is called crown ether..and the ethereal oxygen is oriented towards central metal ions
