we can apply fajan’s rule.. Which states “cation with smaller size and greater charge and anion with larger size and less charge has more polarizing power” So a more covalent compound is formed with smaller cation and largerer anion. so in the case of Ca2+ ,Sr2+ and Ba2+ the covalent character is Ca2+ > Sr2+>Ba2+ but in the case of Zn2+ ,Cd2+, Hg2+ order will be reversed as Zn2+ CdCl2>ZnCl2> CaCl2>SrCl2>BaCl2

    Zncl2

this trend will be applicable to Cu Ag and Au also .....right?

ZnCl2 and CdCl2 have more ionic character and HgCL2 pssess covalent character

  • Suman Kumar Best Answer

    MgCl2 < CaCl2 < SrCl2 < BaCl2. ZnCl2, CdCl2 are ionic but less than IIA, HgCl2 is covalent

So according to fajan’s rule order of covalent character is ZnCl2 > CdCl2 > HgCl2

tell me the order of zeffective for zn , cd and hg
