Marked option is correct. It is related to sudden release of elastic strain energy during fracture propagation(brittle deformation most probably).

The correct answer is C) sudden release of elastic strain energy during fracture propagation. The other options are not correct as earthquakes occur in brittle regime. So the other options that is by plastic flow of rocks and release of plastic strain energy, by folding of layers(occurs in ductile regime) and by release of viscous strain accumulated cannot be true.

Answer (C) Sudden release of elastic strain energy during fracture propagation. An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. When the stress on the edge overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the earth's crust and cause the shaking that we feel.
