Radiolaria : The radiolarians are marine protists made of siliceous skeletons beauti- fully formed from rods and lattices. They are marine and planktic and fi rst appeared in the Cambrian. They are useful in dating and correlating deep-sea sedimentary rocks. All the living species are marine and stenohaline, preferring a salinity of >30 ‰. Their maximum abundance is at a depth of 100 m and they decline towards the surface waters and below depths of 500 m. The environmen- tal distributions of fossil radiolarians of the Cenozoic and Mesozoic were largely similar to that of today’s radiolarians. Some radiolarians associated with corals and rudist bivalves suggest that they inhabited shallow marine environments close to continents.
