Strike line is the intersection line of horizontal plane and bedding plane. The direction perpendicular (90°) to the strike gives the true dip (maximum dip) whereas any other direction gives the apparent dip. Apparent dip is always lower than the true dip amount. As you can see in the attached figure, line-1 is the strike line. Direction-2 is perpendicular to the strike (line-1) and is the true dip direction. Direction-3 is oblique to the strike line and dip measured in that direction will give apparent dip direction.
