Surface waves are seismic waves. Surface waves travel just below the surface of the ground. Speed of surface waves are lower than p-waves; they can be much larger in amplitude and are often the most destructive type of seismic wave. There are several types of surface wave, but the two most common varieties are Rayleigh waves and Love waves. Earthquakes are caused by slippage along faults and generation of seismic waves. Depending on the first compression or uplifting of ground caused by surface waves generated by faulting, beach-ball diagram (Related to earthquakes) can be drawn. By looking at the beach-ball diagrams one can predict the kind of movement and angle of the fault which caused the earthquake. Refer to the attached figure for details about beach-ball diagram and their relationship with different types of faulting.
