Sir, in this whole paragraph, what kind of 'variable' he is talking about.

    Here they are talking about variables like height and distance on plan section. Contour line can be drawn if you will have two variable data; one is height and second is distance data on plan.

    variable here are x and y coordinates and both are creating a plane of horizontal that is xy plane . so contour is a function of two variable.

    y is horizontal .... you can assume anything vertical but is function of two factor ok
