Sir please elaborate 1st three lines only. especially these 2 words - rift valley and selection pressure.
Vegetation was still dominated by conifers, cycads and ferns for much of the Cretaceous but as the environments of the world changed, new species were getting a chance. The rift valleys that were forming at the splits between continents provided new environments that increased selection pressures

Here it is describing that the plants like conifers and cycads survived untill the climate and environment change . The new species are getting evolved as the environment was changing. rift valley means Continental breakof lead to a pressure on environment on choosing new species by natural selection.
