    pure shear is a three-dimensional homogeneous flattening of a body. It is an example of irrotational strain in which body is elongated in one direction while being shortened perpendicularly.  see attached file to get idea

    The question is asking about the relationship between principal stress axis and corresponding strain axis in case of pure shear. In option (|| --> indicates parallel nature), there are different relationship between the two axis. Sigma1(maximum stress) will be parallel to Z and sigma3(minimum stress) will be parallel to X axis. Refer to the attached figure which clearly represents the given situation.
