Uses Schists are generally weak rocks, split readily, cannot be cut across the foliation planes, and Scale of in weathering. They are therefore, generally not used for dimension stones, or for other important engineering purpose

Schist contains schistose structure i.e. foliation planes. Foliations are weak planes along which rock can break easily. It is difficult to cut the schist perpendicular to the foliation/schistosity plane. As a result of weathering, schist rocks break parallel to the schistose planes i.e. weak planes.

Yes, foliation is itself a plane. In case of slate the compaction leads to generation of parallel planes by arranging the platy minerals at microlevel.

Foliations are weak planes along which rock can break easily.Schist contains schistose structure i.e. foliation planes.we can't cut the schist perpendicular to the foliation/schistosity plane.
basically, rock transforming from fine grain to coarser in each mineral.? due to differential stress minerals get foliated. is such a situation sir
foliation developes perpendicular the sigma 1 max stress. the foliated mineral like clay,mica gets orientation to this perpendicular plane. And because material flow from high stress region to low stress region.
