Sideral month is the time the Moon takes to complete one full revolution around the Earth with respect to the background stars. However, because the Earth is constantly moving along its orbit about the Sun, the Moon must travel slightly more than 360° to get from one new moon to the next. Thus, the synodic month or, lunar month, is longer than the sidereal month. A sidereal month lasts 27.322 days, while a synodic month lasts 29.531 days.

You imagine a far star 🌟 and that is your reference . From that star you watch moon revolving around Earth so to complete 360 degree the moon takes 27 days that is sideral period.(sideral month) Now you stand on Earth and. see the revolution of moon 🌕 around it and take certain position of moon and when that moon is revolving around Earth ...Earth is also revolving few more degree around sun ,so moon has to cover that extra distance also to become in the same position and orientation. that is extra 2 days so synodic month is 29 days Figure for understanding
