GPTS, or Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale has been derived from an analysis of magnetic anomalies measured over the ocean floors and combining these anomalies to known and dated magnetic polarity reversals found on land. By convention, positive anomalies represent periods when Earth's magnetic field was pointing north (same as today) as it is today, while negative anomalies represent periods in Earth's history when Earth's magnetic field pointed to the south pole. Chron is the geochronological unit indicates a time Interval whereas chronozone is a chronostratigraphic unit (a rock sequence deposited during a chron).

The magnetic field is generated by electric currents due to the motion of convection currents of a mixture of molten iron and nickel in the Earth's outer core: These convection currents are caused by heat escaping from the core, a natural process called a geodynamo. The magnetic scale 🧲 choron is the ages of geomagnetism. in each choron a specific orientation of magnetic pole exist ... like now we are in normal Choron Braunhes Normal means Geographic North Pole of is in the same direction of magnetic north pole .. Reverse is the geographic north pole coincides with magnetic south Pole. 780,000 year  is the period of each reversal. Matuyama reverse, gauss normal, Gilbert reverse
