    Phosphorus pentoxide is an acid anhydride that is obtained from phosphoric acid. It is highly hygroscopic and is, therefore, used as a dehydrating agent and as a desiccant. As P2O5 is a strong dehydrating agent it remobes water from acetamide CH3CONH2 + P2O5 → CH3CN + H2O Amides, upon action of dehydrating agents like phosphorus pentoxide gives the corresponding cyanide Hence, acetamide gives CH3CN or acetonitrile. The mechanism is as follows
