    Answer: Axial plane and axial trace are two very different terms. First, you should understand that axial plane is a planar surface (2 dimensional feature) and axial trace is a line (one dimensional feature). Now, axial trace is related with axial plane; axial trace is the trace of axial plane on ground surface. When axial plane of any fold intersects the ground surface, it creates a line; the intersection line is known as axial trace. Generally, axial trace will be parallel to the trend of fold axis in case of upright plunging fold (diagram is attached). Axial trace will be perpendicular to the fold axis trend in case of reclined fold.

    Axial plane is a plane passing through successive hinges of any fold. Axial trace a line which is generated as a result of intersection of axial plane with horizontal plane (surface). Axial plane and axial trace are two different things; they aren't same. Refer to the attached diagram for difference between axial plane and axial trace.
