Force can be applied on body and that force generates stress in side body on a area of consideration.so if the stress has a component perpendicular to the area it is known as normal stress and parallel to area called as shear stress.so force direction don't give any principal direction it can sometimes coincide. one of the principal stress can be direction of maximum compression. sigma 3 can be a direction of maximum extension .
