    Deccan flood basalt when cut by anthropogenic actions leads to these caves. flood basalt of decan has 32 layers . deccan flood basalt is formed during the Cretaceous period when indian plate moved over Reunion hot spot.

    Ajanta and Ellora caves are in Maharashtra, and majority of area of Maharashtra are covered be Deccan basalts. Ajanta and Ellora caves are also made by cutting Deccan basalts.
