    ans is 3/8 by total probability theorem P(selecting box) = 1/2 P(defective)=1/4 P(non defective) = 1-1/4 = 3/4 P = 1/2*1/4*3/4 + 1/2*3/4*3/4 = 12/32 = 3/8
